صنعت فتوولتائیک (‏PV) ‏نقش مهمی در پایداری سیستم‌های انرژی دارد. مزایای اقتصادی و زیست محیطی مربوط به کاربرد آن ، بخش PV را به توان نصب شده حدود ۱۳۸ گیگاوات در سال ۲۰۱۳ (۲۴٪ نسبت به ۲۰۱۲) رسانده است.
به روز رسانی اخیر ضایعات اروپایی و تجهیزات الکتریکی و الکترونیکی به طور مستقیم پانل‌های PV پایان عمر (‏EoL)‏را به عنوان ضایعات‌های (ضایعات) الکتریکی / الکترونیکی طبقه‌بندی می‌کند. از این رو، تعریف استراتژی‌های جایگزین برای دفن ضایعات الزامی شد [‏ ۱ ]‏.

The photovoltaic (PV) industry has a relevant role in terms of energy systems sustainability. The economic and environmental benefits related to its application brought the PV sector to an overall installed power of about 138 GW in 2013 (+24% compared to 2012).The recent update of the European Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive classifies End-of-Life (EoL) PV panels as an electrical/electronic waste. Hence, it became mandatory to define alternative strategies to landfill [1].
