Highlights•This research suggests that the in-migration of pre-retirement persons is important in understanding rural entrepreneurship.•Consistent with a small but growing literature, these older migrants are both creating market demand for new rural businesses and starting businesses themselves.•These older migrants bring human, financial and business capital to the community that is often overlooked by local decision makers.AbstractUsing data for U.S. rural counties we examine the how the age profile of migrants from 1990 to 2000 impacts business start-ups in 2000. Depending on the industry classification, we find that younger and older migrants tend to have the largest impacts on rural business start-ups.
